History

This species is endangered because human catch them by throwing nets and they swim into it.

There are only about 1000 left so they are taking them to centers so they can study them and make sure they can reproduce safely.

Location

They live in the Yangtze River.

Organizations are now trying to take them to places to be safe

Habitat Description

They are caught in the Yangtze River, located in Asia.

1067mm of precipitation

It ranges from 68 to 75 degrees F

There are 2 different seasons low and high

Food Web

Interactions

Analysis

  • If the Yangtze Finless Porpoise becomes extinct their food web will see effects immediately because the fish that the Porpoise eats could overpopulate very easily.
  • Overpopulation could harm the first level consumers that the second level consumers eat because there are so many that they will compete against each other for food making it hard for first level consumers to stay at a safe population number.
  • No one would benefit from the Yangtze Finless Porpoise becoming extinct because without them their food web would become mixed up from overpopulation and lack of food. The food web involving the Yangtze Finless Porpoise would suffer the most because of its interactions with it.
  • Sea Snakes often eat Goby fish.
  • The Sea Snake and Yangtze Finless Porpoise compete against each other for the Goby fish.
  • The Baji Dolphin was declared extinct because of their lack of food supply.
  • The Yangtze Finless Porpoise needs a variety of food to live off of and without the Baji Dolphin's food supply it is hard for it to find food too.
  • The Common Tern and the Yangtze Finless Porpoise both eat anchovies. They compete against each other for the anchovies.
  • The Yangtze Finless Porpoise often eat fish, shrimp, and squids.

Analysis

Four Organisms that would be affected by the extinction of the Yangtze Finless Porpoise:

  • The Goby Fish:
  • Can produce up to several hundred of eggs which makes the risk of overpopulating much higher
  • The Copepod:
  • Are very small
  • Get eaten by three other organisms in this food web which compete for the Copepod
  • Could underpopulate because of the overpopulation of the Goby
  • The Tadpole:
  • Competes against the Goby fish for the Copepod which could be hard to get to if there are more Goby than normal
  • The Bass:
  • Tadpole doesn't get enough food then the Bass won't have enough Tadpole to eat

Yangtze Finless Porpoise

Neophocaena asieorientalis

Unique Characteristics

  • Seems to have a smile all the time
  • Has a level of intelligence comparable to the gorilla
  • Average length: 6.2 feet long
  • Finless because it doesn't have a dorsal fin
