Opinions

* I think it is a big problem, there are states and countries suffering from water scarcity and we are over here polluting the only thing that's keeping alive, our only survival and we are wasting it.

*I could recycle and not litter basically what we have been told not to do since a kid. Maybe go out to the beaches and lakes and help clean it up by picking up the garbage.

*I am recycling and not littering and i tell my kids not to either.

Questions

What do you think about what pollution? How can you help prevent water pollution? What are you currently doing to prevent it?

Ground Water Pollution

Oxygen Depleting Water Pollution

When humans apply pesticides and chemicals to soils, they are washed deep into the ground by rain water. This gets to underground water, causing pollution underground.

This means when we dig wells and bore holes to get water from underground, it needs to be checked for ground water pollution.

Water bodies have micro-organisms. These include aerobic and anaerobic organisms. When to much biodegradable matter (things that easily decay) end up in water, it encourages more microorganism growth, and they use up more oxygen in the water. If oxygen is depleted, aerobic organisms die, and anaerobic organism grow more to produce harmful toxins such as ammonia and sulfides.

Surface Water Pollution

Surface pollution is when the surface of a body of water gets polluted.

Some waste water, fertilizers and sewage contain high levels of nutrients. If they end up in water bodies, they encourage algae and weed growth in the water. This will make the water undrinkable, and even clog filters. Too much algae will also use up all the oxygen in the water, and other water organisms in the water will die out of oxygen starvation.

Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America and the only one located entirely within the United States. The other four Great Lakes are shared by the U.S. and Canada.

What is water pollution?

Water pollution is any chemical, physical or biological change in the quality of water that has a harmful effect on any living thing that drinks, uses or lives in it. When humans drink polluted water it often has serious effects on their health. Water pollution can also make water unsuitable for any desired use.

How it affects sea creatures

-More Than a Million Sea Birds and Mammals Are Killed Each Year By Ingestion of Plastic

-Chemical Runoff From Farms Has Caused 400 Dead Zones Around the World

-Noise Pollution is Driving Animals to Extinction

-Acid Rain Discharges Toxic Amounts of Aluminum into the Water Systems

Solutions to Water Pollution

Some solutions to water pollution are as follows:

-Never throw rubbish away anyhow. Always look for the correct waste bin. If there is none around, please take it home and put it in your trash can. This includes places like the beach, riverside and water bodies.

-Do not throw chemicals, oils, paints and medicines down the sink drain, or the toilet. In many cities, your local environment office can help with the disposal of medicines and chemicals. Check with your local authorities if there is a chemical disposal plan for local residents.

-Use water wisely. Do not keep the tap running when not in use. Also, you can reduce the amount of water you use in washing and bathing. If we all do this, we can significantly prevent water shortages and reduce the amount of dirty water that needs treatment.

Effects of water pollution

The effects of water pollution are as follows:

-It makes the water dirty

-It is unsanitary

-Bacteria such as E.Coli are found in the water which make it unsuitable for any desire (ex:Swimming & Drinking)

What Chicago could look like if the water pollution continues

How water pollution has affected our environment over the years

In 2011 Lake Michigan was closed due to high amounts of bacteria in the water.
