Chaparral Biome
Wild Goat
- Its wool helps it survive in the harsh mountain climate
- Its horns help defend itself and fight for a female
- Male goats fight for a female, winner mates the girl
- Can be found in Creta, and other Greek islands, in Turkey, Iran, Turkmenia, Pakistan
One of the only decomposers in the Chaparral biome is bacteria because it is so small and unlike others they last long and don't die. They live in the air. Other decomposers are beetles, earth worms, and millipedes.
Decomposers
Puma
- Preffered pray is deer
- Pumas tend to be farther away from the equator
- Is adaptable to its environment ( Used to it)
- Pumas in the wild live 15 years

What is the Chaparral biome?
The chaparral biome is a specific part of each continent that consists of terrain that is mountains and plains. It is also confused with the dessert biome due to their similar features.

Chaparral Environmental Status/Issues
The chaparral biome is threatened by habitat loss due to urban and suburban expansion. This is particularly true of the chaparral biome located in California.
The chaparral biome is very susceptible to intense wildfires, the potential for such fires increases with human over development.
Lumberjacks are cutting down trees and destroying the vegetation. Humans kill animals in the chaparral, which disrupts the food chain. The most devastating problem is wild fires. These wildfires happen often and are mostly started by humans.
The Golden Jackal
- Golden Jackals find a mate for life
- In the winter the Jackals grow a thick coat of hair to prepare for the season
- Jackals are omnivores (54% Meat , 46% Plants)
- The Golden Jackal is abundant in the Mediterranean chaparral. It is currently not on the endangered species list.
Thank you!
Programs and groups helping the chaparral biome
- The Chaparral lands Conservancy -they want to protect and preserve shrubland ecosystems
- The Chaparral Institute- nonprofit, research, and educational organization dedicated to the preservation of native shrubland habitats
Climatogram
A climatogram is a graph chart that displays only the rainfall and temperature of a given area. It is a measure of the general climate of a large ecosystem, also known as a biome.
Climatogram of San Diego, CA
California and Northern Baja California
Climatogram of San Diego, CA, a city within a chaparral region displaying the typical dry summers and non-fluctuating year round weather.

Wind patterns: there are usually cool
and dry ocean breezes
Average Temperature
The temperature varies from 30 degrees to 100 degrees but the average temperature is 64 degrees
They are generally cool, dry ocean breezes
Soil Composition:
- Mostly dry
- does not have many nutrients
solar radiation:
mostly made up of sunlight (ITS VERY HOT!)
Limiting Factors:
water amount is limited ,so plants cant absorb as much water, and this limits the growth on the soil
Chaparral & Locations
Geographic Features:
- mostly made up of hills and mountains with slopes
