Respondents are smokers (specifically cigarettes) and non-smokers which are all students of Ateneo de Naga University with ages from 16 to 26 years old who were officially enrolled during the first semester of the academic year 2013-2014. The study is limited to 200 respondents in different departments and colleges. Mostly are males who smoke just outside the campus. But the study was not limited to places like homes and other places the student preferred to smoke. The respondents of the study were picked randomly by the researcher out of different courses.
The price of a cigarette now that the Sin Tax Bill has been applied is between 3 pesos and 5 pesos. The researchers conducted a paper and pencil survey for 200 students here in Ateneo de Naga University. Before the survey was conducted to the 200 respondents, a strategic plan was made by the researchers to make the survey reliable and valid. The strategy made is that 20 paper and pencil surveys per member of the research group to make it easier and faster.
The students also write the positive and negative effects of smoking, this are the list of positive side effect of smoking relaxation, stress reliever, temporary pleasure, easy to digest, low blood, quick thinking, soothing, fun, and lastly guarantees satisfaction. Students taking cigarette ignore the sin tax bill, because they want to satisfy their needs and also they can afford. And the negative side effect are health risk, lung cancer, addiction, short life or death, easily tired, and destroyed the world. This list explained that ateneans are also aware of the side effects of smoking.
In the research about the effect of Sin Tax Bill in smoking, the researchers found out that there are still many students who buy a cigarette per stick because for them it is more affordable than buying a pack of cigarette. According to an article in the Manila Bulletin newspaper, the Sin Tax Bill was approved and mandated 15 months ago. The government thought that the bill can reduce the number of people who are smoking, especially students like in Ateneo de Naga University. One information that the researchers got is that even those people who are poor are still able to smoke and the researchers agree to this information because a survey was conducted to know whether the students can still afford to buy cigarettes even though its price has increased.

The theoretical framework for the effects of sin tax law to the Ateneans who smoke is associated with their age, course, peer pressure, school factors and financial capability. The research aims to know the students perception on what are the positive and negative effects to them by smoking.
Smoking starts from adolescence, Tyas and Pederson (2014). The termination is difficult when the smoking starts. The curiosity of the individual to try smoking leads to experimentation and tends to increase the risk of adult smoking. Respondents construct an explanation that they smoke because of stress relief and personal reasons.
This table shows that Ateneans have their money to buy cigarette even it has a sin tax bill/law. In the first raw, Students have different ways on finding their needs and that is the smoking, we observed that the most students are still concerned of their health and not the sin tax bill. They have a certain reason why they want to smoke, for the last ages we gave, the students never think about her/his life.
Also, the survey was conducted in many places inside and outside the school but the respondents should be an Atenean. When the survey was done, the researchers made certain that all the questions in the paper and pencil survey are accomplished by the respondents. Some sources of information that the researchers used are newspaper, journals, and internet.
The researchers cannot say yet that the approved Sin Tax Bill will be effective but according to one article in Manila Bulletin, the effect of this bill can be seen in 2017
but it seems like a very long time;
and the bill will also have a significant tax in the cigarette. The researchers also noticed that the students of Ateneo de Naga University has enough money to afford a cigarette. We all know that the said university is a private school so,
many of the students who study
here have enough money
or in simple term, they are rich.
The result on how the price affects the demand for tobacco products, and how the taxation affects the price is explained by Chaloupka (1999). The primary tool of the tobacco taxation is the tobacco control policy. The price of cigarettes is an effective way to dissuade adolescent to discontinue smoking, Liang and Chaloupka (2001).
In 1950, people who smoke cigarettes have the greater risk of having lung cancer than the people who do not smoke. The result of the study says that when you smoke 20 cigarettes per day you have 26 times the risk of having lung cancer, Cancer Research UK (2009).
The Sin Tax Law (R.A. 10351) is an act in which the undesirable goods like alcohol and tobacco products will be levied with higher taxes than other products. The sin tax is levied on those products to discourage the Filipinos from partaking in the use of proscribed goods. This will help the students to set aside smoking, and instead of using their allowance on buying cigarettes, they would rather use their money into something better. Furthermore, the additional taxes on those products will also become one of the sources of government revenue.
Smoking starts from adolescences, generally Ateneans started ages 15-20 years old this are already 4th year high school and college students, the reason are they have their own time, new environment for them, influence from other students who already take cigarette, they want to relax their self and also stress reliever to all the problem that they get from school, the effects sin tax bill/law doesn’t affect Ateneans because they have money to buy any brand of cigarette.
Cigarette smoking is inevitable in the lives of many people. Once a person started to become addicted to smoking, he/she can’t immediately quit. This is due to the presence of nicotine in the tobacco, which causes a person to become physically dependent on and emotionally addicted to smoking. When the person tries to quit, the physical dependence causes unpleasant withdrawal symptoms to the smoker, and the emotional addiction would make it hard for the smoker to stay away from it after quitting.
Nowadays, smoking of cigarettes is common among almost all, including children, teenagers, and college students. On the survey made by the Department of Health, it showed that Filipino children as young as five years old are already starting to smoke. Several factors have influenced them on doing so, such as curiosity, peer pressure, and family smoking.

Due to the addictive nature of nicotine, the recipient of this experiment are at high risk to develop a regular smoking pattern and to continue smoking.
Students note that smoking cigarettes reduces anxiety, and smoking often occurs after stressful events or in stressful situations. Studies find that depressed college students are more likely to smoke and have a more difficult time quitting than non-depressed college students.
This research examined the contributing factors to smoking among Students. The purpose of this study was to identify factors contributing to Ateneo de Naga University College students who smoke cigarette. The aim of the research is to produce an evidence based information that will be presented to Ms. Kimberly Israel.
Two hundred (200) students were selected to answer the survey question. The study found the influence of smoking friends, smoking siblings and family influences, students’ sense of well being and poor ego development to be strong contributing factors to students smoking hobbit.
The study also found that students with psychological problems have a high chance of being addict in smoking. Some risk groups were identified in the study. These include students with low self-esteem, those who performed badly in school, those with weight concerns, those who spend a lot of time on television, popular students in schools with high smoking rates, those with tattoos, and senior students.
This researchmeant to find out the effects of Sin Tax Bill to the demand of the Ateneo male students on cigarettes. It sought to answer the following:
1. What are the effects of the sin tax law to Ateneo male students who smoke cigarettes?
2. How did the students react with the sin tax law?
3. Can the sin tax law lessen the number of students in the university who smoke?
The researcher use a quantitative design for their research. The quantitative research as a formal, objective, symmetric process to describe and test relationships and examine cause and effect interactions among variables. In this study the information was collected through self-administered questionnaires distributed personally to the subjects by the researcher.
The Sin Tax Law/Bill that has been approved by the government is not necessary that it would be immediately applied to everyone. Some say that stopping their habit of smoking is not easy for them. According to some students, it takes time to avoid smoking because smoking makes them feel more relaxed. Some also considers it as a stress reliever to reduce their stress in the problems they are encountering. Even though, they know that it can harm their health, they still pursue smoking because it made them feel happy and some say it can make them closer to their friends.
They did not mind if it is expensive, as long as they are
happy they will take the risk.
To conclude, the Sin Tax Law/Bill
has no effect to the Atenean students.
Based on the illustration, students have their own reasons why they smoke, most of them said they smoke because of their experience and the curiosity of the students to try smoking leads to testing and tends to increase the risk of adult smoking. Several students make an explanation that they smoke because of stress relief and personal reasons.
State health agencies, health care professionals, and other interested organizations should undertake strong efforts to encourage parents to make their homes and vehicles smoke free.
Colleges and universities should ban smoking in indoor locations, including dormitories, and should consider setting a smoke-free campus as a goal. Further, colleges and universities should ban the promotion of tobacco products on campus and at all campus-sponsored events.
Such policies should be
monitored and evaluated
by oversight committees.
So you want to quit smoking, but do you know why? "Because it's bad for you" isn't good enough. To get motivated, you need a powerful, personal reason to quit. Maybe you want to protect your family from secondhand smoke. Maybe the thought of lung cancer frightens you. Or maybe you'd like to look and feel younger.
Choose a reason that is strong enough to outweigh the urge to light up.
