- Before this battle there was a truce between Athens and Sparta that lasted 10 years before Athens attempted the Seige
- This battle was the turning point in the Peloponnesian War
- Many men of the Athens empire were killed in this battle
- Some may describe it as a miracle
- Athens was an army known for its power
- So, Syracuse was put to the ultimate test!
- Athens knew they could not take Syracuse
- So they retreated
- Remaining Athenians were put into stone quarries
- All 3 leaders were killed in this battle
- Nicias though his life would be spared because of the party he controlled
- Some states that were neutral at one time quickly joined forces with sparta
- There was nothing really left of Athens.
