Review of The Spine

  • 33 vertebrae with respective curves
  • Cervical (7)
  • Thoracic (12)
  • Lumbar (5)
  • Sacrum (5 fused)
  • Coccyx (3-5 fused)
  • Supported by the ALL and PLL
  • Intervetebral discs to withstand force and weight bearing
  • This study focuses mainly on the Lumbosacral joint as well as the L4-L5 region.

Analyze Video

Since the beginning of its time, Pilates has been used as cross training method to prevent and treat injuries in dancers

Methods

This study was done to show the positive correlation of Pilates based exercises to improving lumbar flexibility and decreasing low back pain.

Background Research

The Journal of Dance Medicine has shown the following statements to be true in regards to dance, Pilates, and low back injury:

  • Dancers filled out questionnaire
  • Back pain 1-10
  • Back flexibility 1-10
  • Other relevant questions partaining to the back
  • Dancers participated in Pilates based exercises
  • Spinal rollup
  • Cat-cow
  • Bridges
  • Dancers used a foam roller for 1-2 minutes after exercises
  • Before and after videoes took place to compare results
  • Questionnaire was also reanswered to compare results

Is her spine neutral? Is her pelvis neutral? Why would this exercise help with low back pain?

  • Low back pain is common in dancers due to incorrect postural positions (Quinlan, Reinke, and Bogar 170).
  • Increased flexibility could limit low back injuries since the injuries are typically caused by overexhertion of the soft tissue in high ranges of motion (Deigan 13).
  • Staying in the "neutral zone" prevents injury since there is less strain on the muscles and ligaments (Smith 74).
  • Pilates is promising in correcting injuries seen in dancers (Bernardo and Nagle 46).

Hypothesis:

The consistent use of Pilates based exercises will give dancers increased lumbar flexibility as well as decreased low back pain.

Now you try!

Initial Videos

Find a partner and do the three exercises.

See if they are able to articulate their entire spine as well as maintain a neutral spine/pelvis

Conclusion & Results

Initial Results

Average Pain Level: 4.0

Average Flexibility: 5.3

Final Results

Average Pain Level: 2.7

Average Flexibility: 6.3

In conclusion, our hypothesis was proven to be correct. By using Pilates the dancers were able to increase their flexibility and strength so that less tension was put on the lumbar spine as well as correcting themselves to stay in a neutral position.
