We insist on maintaining a signing environment at all times in the ASL classroom for two reasons.
For one, it is considered rude and insulting to speak in front of a Deaf person, which also makes the information shared inaccessible to the Deaf person.
Secondly, this is a language immersion course, which requires that only the target language is used in the classroom. Using only ASL to communicate helps you develop both your comprehensive and expressive skills quickly and effectively.
Attendance is mandatory. Roll call is conducted at the beginning of each class. Students will be allowed two unexcused absences without a grade penalty. If a student has a medical issue or an emergency, you are expected to both send me an e-mail and present a note from the appropriate person to have your absence excused. Each unexcused absence thereafter will result in a 5% deduction of your final grade.

Ready to take a quiz?!?
Don't worry, this pre-unit quiz is intended to introduce you to some features of ASL and Deaf culture and will not be graded.
The course text has homework assignments for you to use to practice & review at home for each unit.
I will be posting the answers to these assignments on Canvas, and you can self-grade your homework assignments.
While I will not be checking whether you have completed your homework, I highly encourage you to do it as it will reflect upon your performance on
quizzes and tests.
