Mealworm Life Cycle

Adult Beetle

  • During the last stage the worm becomes a black or dark brown beetle.
  • Beetles measure about 2 cm.
  • Beetle lives for 1-3 months and lays eggs during this stage.

Pupa

  • Pupa only can wiggle around during this stage, it does not eat.
  • Pupa measures roughly 1 cm.
  • Mealworm is transforming into a beetle during this time.
  • Stage lasts 1-3 weeks.

Larva

  • During this stage mealworm eats, grows and sheds its skin.
  • Measures about 2-3 cm long.
  • This stage lasts 8-10 weeks.

Life Cycle Phase 1: Egg

  • Adult beetle lays hundreds of tiny white eggs.
  • It takes 4-19 days for eggs to hatch.

  • Mealworms' purpose are to be decomposers in their environment.
  • They eat dead plants and animals and also grains.
  • Mealworms obtain water from the food that they eat.
  • They also are food for lizards, spiders, birds, rodents, and some other beetles.

Mealworm Habitat

  • Mealworms live in cool, dark and moist places such as under logs and roots.
