1.the force that seems to operate for good or ill in a person's life, as in shaping circumstances, events, or opportunities: With my luck I'll probably get pneumonia.
2.good fortune; advantage or success, considered as the result of chance: He had no luck finding work.
2.What did it mean if you lived back then and broke mirror?
- if a child rode on the back of a bear they would be protected from the whooping cough
- blessed candles would be burned during birth, deaths or funerals to protect one from threatening spirits.
- The day to bless your candles was on the 2nd of February, called Candlemas.
- there were 3 days you COULD NOT TRAVEL because they were considered evil. If you did, you would fall ill or never return...
- The days were the 1st Monday of April, the 2nd Monday of August and the last Monday in December
- The Church tried to equalize that by adding Saints days, yet the superstition of those days continued
- gargoyles above the churches doors had status of dragons or saints. The people believed that this warded off lurking evil.

So in all, superstitions came about from a lack of understanding. They won't have an effect on your luck. We know this because of modern day science. We know flying is impossible, that your soul isn't going to leave your body when ya sneeze and you wont die walking under a ladder, unless you knock it over.

The things people believed to be bad would bring " bad fortune " to their lives. That is why they took caution and tried to balance the bad luck. Another example would be throwing salt over their shoulders. Nowadays we do the same.

- It was believed that when someone sneezed the devil had an opportunity to enter their body.
- OR another belief was that your soul left your body when you sneezed.
- Therefore saying ' Bless you ' was a form of protection

How did we even become superstitious in the first place?
BLACK CATS
Cats were thought to be demons and were almost always kept by witches. It was said that them witches could turn into these fur-balls.

- It was 'bad luck' to cross paths with a black cat because it would cut ones natural path towards God.
Beliefs and myths originated from early in our world when we didn't have the knowledge we do now. The middle ages was an era believing in magic, witches and the supernatural. People became superstitious out of fear of the unknown.

- a witch is one who uses black magic, or white magic
- they could cast spells, make people sick and shape shift into animals. The most popular is a.............................................................cat...................OR......................................a raven.
- about 200,000 people in Europe in the Middle ages were hanged for practicing witch craft.
- Witches flew around on brooms doing their bidness. The reason was because brooms shooed away horses and they didn't like horses because they had pure spirits.

- another superstition is that your reflection is your soul
- so if broken, it was believed your soul diconnected from your body.
- THE CURE! was to wait exactly 7 hours to pick up the shards and bury them outside in the moonlight
a WITCH is female and a WARLOCK is male. warlocks are cooler though :P
THE LUCKY HORSESHOE:)
- walking under a ladder was bad luck because it symbolized the gallows- where people were hanged. It was believed your own death would be faced by walking through the triangle.
- Another belief was that it symbolized the holy trinity and it was blasphemy and would invite the devil in.
- it was a medieval belief that they would ward off witches or evil spirits. It was also believed that horses had the same effect on witches
- One way to turn the table of luck here would be walking back under it or crossing your fingers until you see a dog.
- Not just any horseshoe was lucky though, it had to be iron and come off of a horse by natural causes.
- To carry out the luck, it would be placed over the handle of a door at a certain angle and secured with iron nails. The curve would be at the bottom, to prevent the LUCK from spilling out.
