- He was born on the island of Nevis in the West Indies
- Worked for a trading firm on St. Croix
- His employer sent him to the United States becaue he was so impressed with Hamilton's skill and focus
- During the Revolutionary War, he was appointed to be a captain
- Practiced law for a while
- He became a delegate for Congress in New York
- Few of Hamilton's ideas were included in the U.S. Constitution, but he worked hard for its ratification by the states
