Santiago's Father was a conformist he did'ent achieve his personal legend he preferred to let Santiago achieve his own dream. And leave it all behind.
Conformity and Nonconformity there both very different things. They both have different meanings. When you are a conformist you apply yourself to not change. You stay with your life exactly how it is. And a nonconformist are those types of people who aren't afraid of change. Who want to fulfill there dream.

In conclusion Conformity Vs Nonconformity is a theme used a lot through out the book. Which there are also a lot of examples of this theme. Such as like the ones that i gave. Conformity and Nonconformity are in very different poles but they both share a very important theme in The Alchemist.

First Example
The Crystal Merchant in the book is a example of a conformist. He is the first person Santiago worked for. Santiago told him that he wanted to complete his personal legend. The crystal merchant has dreams but he tells Santiago he is afraid of change he prefers just to dream about it because he will be afraid of a disappointment. But his dream has always been to go to Mecca. But to bad he doesn't pursue it because he is a conformist afraid of change.
Second Example
In the book Santiago had a dream about a treasure. His dream was always to travel the world but at first his sheep stopped him. But once he knew that, that was his personal legend he decided to go and fulfill his dream. Santiago also says his purpose in his life is to travel. So Santiago is a example of a Nonconformist.
