Early Life

Becoming a Saint

  • San Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino saint.
  • He was born in Binondo, Manila, Philippines on November 28, 1594.
  • He had a Chinese father and a Filipina mother who were both Catholic.
  • Since Ruiz and his companions were all Christians, they were arrested and thrown into prison.
  • Soon enough, they were all transferred to Nagasaki, Japan to face trial by torture.
  • On September 27, 1637, Ruiz and his companions were taken to Nishizaka Hill where they were to be tortured.
  • The method of torture was called Tsurushi.
  • The method was said to be extremely painful, the victim was bounded/tied up and hung upside down and lowered into a hole. There would be a cut made on the forehead causing all the blood rushing to the head to gush out.
  • Lorenzo Ruiz died on September 29, 1637.
  • His body was cremated and thrown into the sea.
  • Lorenzo Ruiz was beatified (when a dead person, who did great things for the Lord, enters heaven) on February 18, 1981 in Manila, Philippines by Pope John Paul II.
  • Later on, he was canonized and became a saint on October 18, 1987 in Vatican City, Rome, Italy by Pope John Paul II.

  • By the time they got to Japan, the Tokugawa Shogunate (the rulers of Japan at the time) were persecuting all Christians.
