Performance Preparation
In a 'Journal of Music Education Research' study done to examine critical thinking skills within high school choir rehearsals, it was observed that only 6.36% of the mean rehearsal time was spent on critical thinking skills. Yet music educators agree that these higher-level thinking skills are essential for students to develop musicianship (Garrett, 2013). Lack of critical thinking due to emphasis on Rote Rehearsal.
The majority of a choir rehearsal is structured to depend on Rote Rehearsal- which is learning through repetition. Practice makes Permanent.
On the other hand, Elaborative Rehearsal is learning through understanding connections. The goal of elaborative rehearsal is to apply what is learned in a variety of settings and to find the relationships between information.
Choral Directors must make
Elaborative Rehearsal a priority.
