What was the Ottoman Empire's economy based on?

Trade

Istanbul was the crossroads of trade between the east and west. Caravans and ships with silk, tea, spices, and pocelain. Ships that carried furs, grains , and amber came from the Black Sea and southern Russia. Also mirrors and drugs from Europe. The Ottoman took over the Seljuk caravan stops which were 25 miles away from main trade routes. The main exports were leather, skins, and wool.

The Ottoman and Malmuk strangehold on trade with the East and their excessive markups caused Europeans to seek other routes to Asia, launching the age of discovery and the international trade which flowed through the empire declined. Also, the silver which poured in from the new world caused inflation and other economic troubles for the empire, which was based on a silver standard

The Ottomans didn't have a lot of farm land but where they had rivers is where they would grow their crops. Such as wheat, rye, and barly. Seeing they didn't have a lot of good agriculture land they had to use it very effectivly, which they did.

Taxes

There were taxes on almost ever transactions. Taxes were 10-20% and profits were limited to 10% by the government. The government also made you have to have a license if youmowned a buisness.
