Way of Life
The Pacific Coast First Nations were nomadic. They had to move from fishing spot to fishing spot to catch lots of seafood. They catch shellfish and fish and collect berries. There is a special fish that they catch to collect oil. This oil-producing fish is called the eulachon. Since it was usually very hot, they often did not wear clothes apart from capes and masks.
Homes
The people of the Pacific Coast First Nations made their houses out of cedar wood. The houses were usually large with carved decorated poles at the front and the back. The houses were also strong enough to last a long time. The oldest village site that these First Nations built was estimated to be 4,000 years old.
Food
The Pacific Coast First Nations ate all different kinds of food. They ate lots of shellfish such as clams, periwinkles, abalone, mussels and oysters. They also ate lots of fish because it was their staple food. They were salmon, herring and smelt. This group of tribes hunted, fished and gathered berries before winter.
Principal Tribes
Social Organization
The Pacific Coast First Nations people all had a job to do. Obviously, the chief was in charge of the whole tribe. The people of the tribe were shaman, men, women, elders and children. The shaman's job was to heal the sick with natural herbs and juices. The men's jobs were to build houses, hunt for food, and keep the tribe safe from large, dangerous animals and enemy tribes. The women's jobs were preparing food and collecting berries. The elders taught children how to do daily tasks and they also spread knowledge amongst the tribe.
Natural Environment
There were six principal tribes of the Pacific Coast First Nations. They were the Haida, Tsimshian, Salishan, Kwakiutl, Bella Coola and Nootka tribes. The Haida language was only spoken by the Haida tribe, who lived on the Queen Charlotte Islands. The Tsimshian was divided in to three groups who all spoke the Tsimshian language. they lived across the Charlotte islands on the mainland. The Salishan tribe lived along the east coast of Vancouver Island and along the mouth of Columbia River. The Kwakiutl, Bella Coola, and Nootka tribes also spoke the Salishan language.
In the areas where the Pacific Coast First Nations lived, it was very hot. Because of the heat they often did not wear clothes. Since there is a ocean (Pacific Ocean), the First Nation's staple diet is fish. They also caught and ate shellfish, berries and oil. There are a lot of cedar trees around the shore of the Pacific, which they can make canoes out of.
