Consumers

**Consumers are Heterotrophs meaning they DO NOT make their own food like plants.

Herbivores = consumer that eats only plants.

  • grasshopper, moose

Carnivore = eats other animals or meat

  • wolf, snake or badger

Scavengers = specialized consumer that feeds on dead organisms.

  • vultures

Omnivore = eats both plants and animals

  • Hedgehog, mouse

How do organisms get energy?

PRODUCER (Autotroph) = Use energy to make own food

  • grass and trees

Decomposer = gets energy by breaking down the remains of other organisms.

  • mushrooms and some bacteria

Ecosystems

Name:

Contact:

Food Webs

  • feeding relationships among organisms in an ecosystem

**More complex than food chain because animals like to eat more than 1 thing

Energy Transfer in an Ecosystem

  • Food Chains = path of energy transfer from producers to consumers.

Organization in the Environment:

  • Population = group of individuals of the same species living in same place.
  • Ecosystem = community of organisms and their nonliving environment.
  • Factors that limit an ecosystem are space, water, and food.

How are all living things connected?

Ecology = The study of how organisms interact with each other.

  • Biotic Factor = Living parts of environment
  • horse, trees, insects

  • Abiotic Factor = nonliving parts of environment
  • rocks, air, soil, sunlight
