The Crucible

What role did fear play in creating authority?

IIn the society of Salem, fear played a huge part in creating authority.

"John, if it were not Abigail you must go to hurt, would you falter now? I think not"(193).

Tituba- She was afraid of being hanged, so she gave into authority. She was also given a position of authority because at that time, a confessed witch was the most credible way of determining who else was a witch.

Parris- Parris covered up Abigail and the girls practicing witchcraft because he was concerned with his reputation.

Abigail- Abigail was afraid of punishment for her actions, so in order to take the blame off her she accused others of witchcraft.

John Proctor- He was fearful that his affair would be exposed to the court, therefore he was passive. This allowed Abigail to become so powerful since she had no opposition.

Mary Warren- She feared Abigail's death threats.

John is afraid of going to court to testify against Abigail because he does not want his past affair with Abigail to be exposed. Therefore, he is hesitant to put a stop to the witch trials.

"But if you trafficked with spirits in the forest, I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it"(170).

Parris is overly concerned about himself and his reputation, therefore he turned a blind eye towards what Abigail had done.

Conclusion

Anyone has the ability to become powerful through fear and intimidation. However, there are always those who choose to resist unfair authority.

Quotes

"If so he is, then let us go to God for the cause of it. There is prodigious danger in the seeking of loose spirits. I fear it, I fear it. Let us rather blame ourselves" (180).

This illustrates how the citizens of Salem fear witchcraft. Rebecca Nurse refuses to blame other people.

"She wants me dead. I knew all week it would come to this!"(196).

"Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, or the edge of word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you"(175).

Elizabeth fears that Abigail could have her hanged, so she chooses to resist authority by persuading John Proctor to expose Abigail's lies in court.

Because the girls, especially Mary Warren, were afraid of Abigail, this gave her control since she had many followers.

"You will confess yourself or I will take you out and whip you to your death Tituba." "This woman must be hanged! She must be taken and hanged!" (188).

Tituba is frightened by their threats, so she confesses and blames others as well to take the attention off of her.Tituba was also in control because at the time, confessed witches had credible accusations.
