The one thing that does not change is why the system of the twelve year zodiac was created in the first place.

The Chinese people needed a way to keep up with time.

It was designed to track the waxing and waning phases of the moon, used as a method for counting years, months, days and hours in the Chinese imperial court and civil calendar, and utilized to forecast one’s future and determine one’s character.

The Story Goes....

The Chinese Zodiac

Within the Chinese Zodiac a person can have more than one animal sign.

  • There is the Animal of the birth year
  • The Inner animal (assigned by month)
  • The True animal (assigned by day)
  • The Secret Animal (assigned by hour)

The Year

The Month

What the Animals Represent...

the month is the pillar representing information about the person's parents or childhood. The zodiac animals apply to the month of the lunar calendar

The year is the pillar representing information about the person's family background and society or relationship with their grandparents.

A zodiac animal is associated w/each year in a 12 year cycle.

Unlike the Western Zodiac, the animals of the Chinese zodiac correspond to years instead of months.

Ten Heavenly branches, Twelve Animals

The 12 branches (animals) are combined with the 10 stems (ten days of the ten-day week used by Shang rulers) to form 60 two-symbol units. These units make up the Sexagenary system

In China, the earliest depictions of the 12 Zodiac animals appear in tomb-ceiling paintings dated to 533 BC <source: NY Metropolitan Museum of Art>. The zodiac system greatly influenced the Buddhist practice.
