The Vietnamese perspective shows us that they have a strong belief in their unity against opponents and confidence in victory, as stated by Ho Chi Minh. He says, “The patriotism and heroism of the Vietnamese people allow us to have firm confidence in final victory.”
When the Vietnamese battle foreign powers, they can come together and defeat the enemy through strength and patriotism. This was the case at the battle of Dien Bien Phu, when the Viet Minh defeated French forces. "They fought for their families, their freedom" says Kim, a native of Vietnam.
The French perspective shows us that that the Vietnamese people are really not as soft as they thought. When the French took over, they never gained complete control over the hearts of the Vietnamese people. In order to fight for their unity as an independent country, Vietnam never gave up.
Dien Bien Phu. The French believed that they could station in a different country illegally without being stopped because of their “strategic location” and “unstoppable military tactics”. Well on March 13th, 1954 the Vietminh, with their weapons and supplies on their backs, bombarded on the outpost “Beatrice” and completely surprised the French. After over a month of fighting, the French were defeated.
The battle of Bach Dang wasn't about Vietnam's independence. For them, this battle was solely about the Mongol's settlements in vietnamese territory, and believe that the vietnamese were overly vicious in their brutal attacks on the invaders. They do, however, acknowledge Vietnam's success against them.
The Americans didn’t believe in communism, and would do anything to fight the spread of it. They believed that once Vietnam became a communist nation, that communism would spread to take over all countries and their people.
In the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the French needed all the help they could get. When they needed pilots for their air attacks, the United States aided them with 37 men. Also, when the French needed a new leader of their forces in Vietnam, the American government agreed that Henri Navarre would be best suited for the Job. He would later fail to keep a grasp on the Vietnamese and lose the French territories in Vietnam.
The germans were allies of the United States, and saw Ho Chi Min as a ruthless dictator of the vietnamese people. They helped supply the United states in the eventual Vietnam war- technically aiding in the battles against Vietnam's independence.
