- Assef was around the same age as Amir. He was aggressive, violent and always thought he was better than all the other kids.

- Chapter 5 begins with Ali, Hassan and Amir all huddled together as they wait out the gunshots and explosions that are going on outside one night.

- Baba was nowhere to be seen that night but turned up the next morning. "They blocked all the roads and the telephone didn't work. I was so worried!" (Hosseini, 34)

- After listening to all the hysteria on the radio about the night before, Hassan and Amir went and climbed their tree.

- On their way to their tree. They encounter Assef. The neighborhood "bully"

- Assef was the son of an airplane pilot named Mahmood, a friend of Baba.

- Assef was known for carrying around his stainless-steel brass knuckles.

- It is now winter. All afghans love winter because it snows and there is rarely school. And its kite running season.

- Describes how Hassan and Amir used to build kites out of glue, bamboo, string and paper but weren't very good at it.

- When kite fighting, your hands get really cut and hurt from the tugging of the kite string

- That year, Baba was going to take them to buy proper kites to fight with in the tournament.

- This chapter also explains the rules of the kite running.

- Hassan was the best kite runner and could predict where the kite was going to land.

- A few days before the tournament, Baba and Amir sat together in his study.

- Baba predicted that Amir was going to win this kite tournament

- Amir imagined how proud Baba would be. He imagined all the fun things they would do together if he won.

- The night before the tournament it was snowing really hard. Hassan and Amir were playing cards. There was a dicussion about TV's and how when they came to Afghanistan, Amir was going to buy one for Hassan.

-Hassan told Amir that he really thought he could win the tournament tomorrow

- The chapter ends with Hassan telling Amir that he really likes where he lives and that its his home.
