Room layout

Room layout and supervision

  • Children should have room to move around safely
  • Toys and equipment should be easy to tidy away
  • Floor areas should be easy to keep clean and dry
  • Fire exits should be kept clear
  • Doors kept secure
  • Kitchens / stairs out of bounds by safety gates

Good supervision is a balance between allowing children to explore and grow in independence and making sure they are not doing anything dangerous to harm themselves and/or others.

Adult to child ratio

0 - 2 years = 1:3

2 - 3 years = 1:4

4 - 8 years = 1:6

Outdoor areas

Outdoor areas need to be checked for:

Poisonous plants

Animal faeces

Broken fences or gates

Faulty equipment

Water

Safe environments for children in day care

It is our responsibility to keep children safe.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states... Employees must:

  • use safety equipment provided e.g. disposable gloves or stair gates
  • make sure that their actions do not harm others e.g. leave a hot drink in reach of children
  • report hazards and follow the policies of the setting
