Presenting...
The sinking of...
...the MV Doña Paz
MV Dona Paz was built in 1963 by Onomichi Zosen, and was sold to Sulpicio Lines in 1975. She was originally named Himeyaru Maru.
The route she travelled was: Manila-Tacloban-Catbalogan-Manila, every 2 weeks.
On the 20th of December 1987, the deadliest peacetime, maritime disaster in history unfolded.
In Loving Memory of
the victims of the
Dona Paz Tragedy
(December 20, 1987)
On this day, MV Doña Paz, a Philippine registered passenger ferry and MT Vector, a gas tanker, collided into eachother.
This collision ignited a massive fire to the MT Vectors cargo and spread onto the MV Doña Paz.
The flames engulfed MV Doña Paz, which, eventually sank.
Unfortunately, yes, most of all of the almost 5000 passengers and crew members were lost. The ship was only allowed to carry 1,518 passengers, legally.
Only 26 lived to tell the tale. 24 were passengers from the MV Doña Paz and 2 were crew members from the MT Vector. None of the crew in the MV Doña Paz survived.
Most bodies were not recovered. The survivors who lived were covered with burns. This was because the only way of escape was jumping into the burning waters. Many did not have the chance to act so quickly.
Survivors were forced to swim around the ship and charred bodies through the shark-infested Tablas Strait, to get help.
Later, legal documents were released. On the MV Doña Paz, only one apprentice crew member was on duty, watching the bridge, and the captain was in his quarters watching a movie.
The MT Vector was operating without a license or a qualified master. They were forced to have to pay the families of the survivors and to indemnify (compensate for) the victims.
All in all, the sinking of the MV Doña Paz was a very tragic incident. Although this shipwreck is very hard to locate. But, it is known that the ship sank in the Tablas Straight. It is understood that because of the fire, many parts of the ship was incinerated.
