Chancellor- the leader of the German government
Concentration Camp- a defined area to house Jews during the Holocaust
Star of David- Jewish religious symbol made into a patch to be placed on the arms of all Jews' clothing.
Ghettos- ares predominantly occupied by a particular group or demographic
- Henry Oertelt eventually immigrates into the United States, and settles down in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
- Freda Wineman settles in the United Kingdom.
- Henia Bryer moves to Haifa, Palestine and eventually moves to Bloemfontein, South Africa.
- Jolie Hillman-Noy moves to Cleveland, Ohio, and eventually settles in Nazareth, Israel.
- Peter Hersch travels around Germany and visits hometown of Loza, Czechoslovakia.
Final Solution- Hitler's plan to exterminate as many Jews as possible

Massive Jewish deportation from France.
"Final Solution" started to eliminate as many Jews as possible.
Jews sent to Warsaw to discourage revolts within the camps. At this time, only 15,000 Jews out of 500,000 remained alive.
Survivors
- Hillman-Noy- camp is evacuated in death marches. They reach Bergen-Belsen where they are later liberated by British troops.
- Hersch- marches to Gunskirchen, and is liberated by United States troops.
- Bryer- sent on death march to Bergen-Belsen and is also liberated.
- Wineman- Bergen-Belsen (the camp she was at) is liberated.
- All of these survivors become part of programs to either move to Israel, stay in Europe, or immigrate into the United States.
- Wineman- family flees to Vichy, France.
- Oertelt- arrives at Thereseinstadt concentration camp.
- Oertelt- Sent on death march. Eventually ends up in Flossenburg.
- Bryer- sent to Auschwitz.
- Wineman- arrives at Birkenau
- Jewish businesses closed and Jews forced to wear stars
- Oertelt- Forced from his family's home.
- Hersch- Hungary captures Loza, Czechoslovakia (his home town).

1933- Hitler becomes elected as Chancellor and establishes his SS troops and other forces to do his bidding.
1935- Swastika becomes Germany's flag.
1937- Buchenwald Concentration camp is established.
1938- Violent actions begin happening against Jews, and curfews take effect.
- Hillman-Noy- Hungary annexes Transylvania.
- Wineman- Still in Blamont, living as refugees as the the Germans invade France.
- Bryer- sent to Majdanek concentration camp.
- Oertelt- moved to Auschwitz.
- Wineman- family is captured for bartering their rationed goods, and sent to Drancy.
- Wineman- sent to Bergen-Belsen
- Oertelt- sent on death marches to avoid capture by Allied soldiers. Is liberated by Allied troops.
- Hersch- sent to Auschwitz. Later sent to Matthausen.
- Hillman-Noy- arrives at Auschwitz, and is later sent to Gross-Rosen.
Drancy- a particular ghetto by Paris, France.
Majdanek concentration camp- camp in Lublin, Poland

You will follow the lives of five Jewish survivors during the World War II in comparison to Hitler and the Nazis.
The five survivors are Henry Oertelt, Henia Bryer, Peter Hersch, Freda Wineman, and Joli Hillman-Noy.
Terezin
- This city is located in the Eastern part of what was Czechoslovakia. It is where the Thereseinstadt concentration camp was established in 1941. Oertelt was sent to this camp.
Loza
- Hometown of Peter Hersch and located in the far western area of Czechoslovakia. This city was annexed, along with others, but Hungary in 1939.
Bergen
- The city very close to where the camp Bergen-Belsen was established in 1943 as a concentration camp. Prior to becoming a concentration camp, it was a prisoner of war camp. It is located in the north-eastern region of Germany. Joli Hillman-Noy stayed at this camp.
Gusen
- City near the Matthausen concentration camp where Peter Hersch was held. It is located in the northern part of Austria.
