The Call for Reform

Catholic Church Faces Challenges

  • He believed that god knew who would be saved by the time they were born.
  • In 1541 he was made church and political leader of Geneva, Switzerland.
  • They taught others about their ways.
  • The churches teachings weakened.
  • One of the first people to seek reforms was Desiderius Erasmus.
  • His ideas helped people come back to the church that had left.
  • People began to complain about problems in the Church.
  • Their calls led to the reformation.

In the previous chapter you learned about the Renaissance, in this chapter you will learn about the reformation of the Christian Church.

Henry VIII

  • Main figure in England was Henry VIII.
  • He asked the pope for the end of his marriage.
  • He did not get what he wanted so he declared himself head of the church of England.
  • Broke from the church for more personal reasons than religious.

  • Thought everyone should be able to read the bible.
  • Back then only clergy could read the bible.
  • He tried to translate a bible for people to read.
  • He was chased out of the country by the church, and then later executed by the church.

The religious landscape of Europe changed dramatically in the 1500's. People were unsatisfied with the Christian Church. Muslims, Catholics and Jews all lived peacefully until the Catholics wanted more land for their religion. This led to protestants nowhere in Spain. Then people went out to the world and spread the teachings of Christianity. While this was happening protestants were coming back for land which left the religions in thirty years of religious war and ended with the Treaty of West Phalia.

  • Spain used to be Islam,Judaism, and Catholic.
  • Religions did not fight, so they prospered.
  • Catholics wanted more land.
  • Monarchs sent the inquisition to find protestants.
  • Once all protestants were found the church was very strong.

  • Effort to try and reform the church was called the Catholic Reformation.
  • Leaders worked to prevent Protestantism.

Now you know about the unsatisfaction with the Christian church, and how the Muslims, Jews, and Catholics lived, and how the protestants complained and began a thirty year war which ended in the peace treaty " The Treaty of West Phalia". Now you will learn about how the reformation of the church paved a way for the growth of science and the scientific revolution.

New Religious Orders

  • Some people were turning away from the church.
  • First new order created by Ignatius of Loyola.
  • This order was the Jesuits.
  • Another order created by Angela Merici called the Ursuline Order

Performance Task

The class will divide into six groups and those groups will be answering questions together. We will ask questions and the first group to raise they´re hands will get to answer the question. If correct, the team will get a point. If the answer is wrong the next team will get to answer.

Martin Luther was caught in a horrific storm where he feared for his life, Luther cried out to St. Anne, the patron saint of miners, "Save me Saint Anne, and I'll become a monk!" the storm subsided and he was saved.

Martin Luther was born in Eisleben, Germany, in 1483 and he died in February 18, 1546 at the age of 63 from a stroke. He had lived in four different places, Eisenach, Mansfeld, Maydeburg, and Eisleben. He was credited with starting the reformation, but he never wanted to leave the Catholic Church.

Martin Luther was credited with starting the Reformation of the Christian Church which allowed people of the region to go back to church.

If Martin Luther never existed it would be bad. It would be bad because Martin would have never helped the Reformation of the Catholic Church so it probably would have never happened.
