Evidence #2: Death of Simon

  • Simon was killed despite innocence.

- trying to spread good word, which was that no beast existed, which is what Jack's group opposed/denied.

  • "The water rose farther and dressed Simon's coarse hair with brightness. The line of his cheek silvered and the turn of his shoulder became sculptured marble." William Golding, Lord of the Flies, Ch. 9

- death is parallel to Christ's crucification

,

Simon's Physical Attributes and Personality Similar to Christ

Evidence #1: Garden of Eden

  • "Now that the pallor of his faint was over, he was a skinny, vivid little boy, with a glance coming up from under a hut of straight hair that hung down, black and coarse" page 24.

- black, long hair; skinny

Evidence #3: The Ascension of simon

  • As shown in chapter three, Simon is portrayed as very independent.

-Simon goes off on his own to explore the island.

- Similar to Christ: Finding in The Temple

  • Water/waves represents sky; the waves carry Simon into the ocean, causing him to disappear in to the ocean
  • Peaceful jungle glade/meadow Simon visits in chapter three, can be related to the Garden of Eden.
  • Similar to ascension of Jesus

Theme: Mankind tends toward denial of difficult truths, and this denial leads to destruction.

2 examples:

  • Golding describes this scene with glorification - "The line of his cheek silvered and the turn of his shoulder became sculptured marble" (pg. 154).
  • Denial of your own actions - as demonstrated in the novel, the killing of Simon, which introduces salvagry and the falling apart of rules = destruction and chaos.
  • Denying the death of a loved one - inability to accept the truth, which leads to losing the sense of reality.
