Emily Dickinson's: Because I could not stop for Death

By: Brianna Young

Effect of the Anaphora

  • Dickinson uses the anaphora in her

poem to give the reader a sense of what she was leaving behind.

  • The use of repetition anticipates the next line.
  • Since death is taking Dickinson away in the poem, the anaphora can help the reader understand that her life is passing by.

Anaphora in the Poem

Literary Device

The anaphora is shown in the third stanza of Dickinson's poem. The stanza states,

"We passed the School, where Children strove

At Recess – in the Ring –

We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –

We passed the Setting Sun – " (Dickinson 408-409)

Each new clause in the stanza starts off with "We passed", creating repetition.

Emily Dickinson uses

rhetorical devices in her poem, Because I could not stop for Death. The one that stands out to me the most is anaphora.

-Anaphora is a device in which the writer repeats a word or phrase at the beginning of multiple clauses or sentences.

e.g: “Every day, every night, in every way, I am getting better and better”
