Technology in the 1950s
Solar Cell 1954
Computer Modem 1958
Credit Cards 1950
Bar code 1952
- The solar cell was invented by 3 people: Gerald Pearson, Calvin Fuller and Daryl Chapin
- It was a silicon solar cell that was designed to use a six percent energy conversion efficiency with direct sunlight.
- Bell Laboratories announced the new solar battery
- Today, this invention helpes save electricity in the day. It is one of the most used alternative energy sources.
- Pro: Save energy, Low maintenance
- Con: Expensive, need land
- Modems were used to communicate data over the public switched telephone network or PSTN. A modem sends and receives data between two computers.
- Inventors: Dennis Hayes and Dale Heatherington
- Made communication between business easier
- Today, we use computer modems for personal computers and advanced communication (AT&T phones)
- Invented by Joseph Woodland, but mostly hear about George Laurer.
- The very first bar codes were in the shape of a bull's-eye
- ,Was actually called a “Classifying Apparatus and Method.”
- But Woodland is often overlooked because he didn't have the expenses to make his idea come to life.
- Then George Laurer was hired in 1973 to make Woodland idea work.
- Bar codes made business and merchandise transactions happen quicker.
- Woodland was harder to read, and print on packages while Laurer demanded less space, different shape, and didn't smear.
- The credit card was invented in 1950 by Ralph Schneider. The idea came to mind when Frank McNamara had dinner at New York Major's Cabin Grill and had forgotten his wallet. He figured there should be an another option for cash. Building on this idea, McNamara told Raplph Schneider and together they made the credit card.
- The first credit card was mainly for travel and entertainment purposes.

- Pro: No cash so use credit, rewards, security
- Con: Credit builds up, Interest, fees, debt
- Ethical: Should I use my credit card to make this purchase?
- Lawsuits/Cases: Identity theft (Ex: Amar Singh)
Satellite 1957
Sputnik is the first group to ever make a satellite and it was created by the soviet union.
Transistor Radio 1953
- The transistor was created by John Bardeen, Walter Barrtain, John R Pierce.
The satellite was silver in color, about the size of a beach ball, and weighed a mere 184 pounds. Yet for all its simplicity, small size, and inability to do more than orbit the Earth and transmit meaningless radio blips, the impact of Sputnik on the United States and the world was enormous and unprecedented.
- The transistor was very popular in the 1950 and 60's it was like a very cool device that people love to listen to music on.
- Work places were excited about get the transistor because it help manage lot of thing at work.
