Cobalt's Role in the Body
- Cobalt is a part of Vitamin B12, which is needed for human health
- Cobalt is used to treat anaemia in pregnant women, because it stimulates red blood cell production
- Total daily intake of cobalt is a maximum of 1mg
- Concentration Range:
- Human abundance by weight : 20 ppb by weight
- Human abundance by atoms: 2 atoms relative to C= 1000000 * ppb parts-per-billion, 10–9
- Cobalt is found on the earths crust. It is also found as a result of the mining industry.
- when you breath in to much cobalt you increase the chance of having asthma and pneumonia
- to much of cobalt concentration and the results are vomiting, nausea, vision problems, heart problems and thyroid damage.
Lack of cobalt in the soil is also detrimental (e.g. in Australia sheep suffer from Coast disease caused by lack of cobalt in the soil.)
foods that contain cobolt also contain Vitamin B12.
Vitamin B2 is needed for healthy skin, healthy hair, healthy eyes, and energy
production.
Healthy foods that contain vitamin B2 include: organic beef liver, mushrooms,
organic eggs, raw almonds, organic beef, broccoli, spinach, organic chicken,
asparagus, and wild salmon
Cobalt is contained in vitamin B12. It is important in shaping and forming protein and DNA regulation.
- trace mineral in the human body ( needed in small amounts by the body)
- absence may lead to health problems
- used for the production of enzymes and vitamin B12, which is necessary to ensure that an adequate amount of red blood cells are being produced.
- Excess of Cobalt may lead to health problems (e.g. cobalt dust may cause vomiting, diarrhea, or breathing problems. On the skin, it can cause rashes and irritation.)
Cobalt
What are it's properties that allow it to be useful within your body?
Cobolt
Cobolt makes up (0.0000021%) of the human body.
The refining process of elements such as nickel, copper, silver and lead. Cobalt deposits can be found in places such as Canada. In addition, meteorites in the past that have hit earth contained cobalt.
