A Great Nurse's Journey

The Attributes to Becoming a Great Nurse

Conclusion

We can all become great nurses; but we have to continue to work hard, love what we do, and most importantly, always put our patients first. School and work and life in general will always have challenges, but overcoming them and learning from them is what will make us into the best nurses we can possibly be. Remembering where we started, being open to every new experience, and never losing sight of what takes top priority will sculpt us into who we need to be for our patients, and at the end of the day, the greatest nurses of them all are probably far too humbled by the experience to say so.

A great nurse needs to be empathetic, caring, responsible, and motivational. Being the person that cheers your patient on, listens to anything they have to say (and really hears them), understanding that they most likely do not want to be in the situation that has brought them to you, and knowing that you are the one that has to advocate for them in every way is what makes the difference between good and great. Anyone can pass tests and learn what we need to know to nurse; only the best can do all of that and genuinely care. It has been said time and time again, nurses have to LOVE what they do and want to be where they are more than anything else. An emotional connection to the job and the patients is what sets nurses apart in the healthcare setting.

Emotional Connection

Technology

In this video, we see all of the different ways we need to be available to our patients and heal them in a holistic manner. Nurses have a lot of "hats" to wear at work and I feel this video displays them all in a way that shows us how our jobs and choices impact those we care for.

In nursing, we use a lot of technology both to care for our patients and to communicate with the entirety of the healthcare team. We need to document, research, and utilize technological equipment in treatments and monitoring. Almost anything we do will require us to be flexible and knowledgeable when it comes to the systems and equipment that help us do our job. Technology is constantly evolving and is another thing we need to keep up with to better the experience and assistance we provide our patients. A great nurse understands both the advantages and the disadvantages of utilizing technology so heavily. We rely on it, but have to also know how to be great if it fails us. Great nurses can juggle between the two sides of this and care for their patients regardless.

Healing Holistically cont.

Healing Holistically

We recently discussed what it means to nurse in a holistic manner. Holistic nursing is patient based care that focuses on healing someone in every aspect. Focusing not only on treating the medical issue that we are presented with, but also learning how to ensure the patient is well on a personal level is what they deserve. Involving loved ones (with permission), understanding the emotional impact of the treatment and diagnosis, and making sure they can and will live life after they leave us in a safe and healthy way are just a few examples of holistic nursing. Treating a patient like a human being should be a priority for anyone entering the nursing field.

Evidence Based Practice

Critical Thinking cont.

Evidence based practice is what keeps our field going and shows the world that we care about what we are doing. It is basically defined as bringing current information that is medically relevant into patient care. Basing our healthcare practice off of proven methods is how we can ensure our patients are receiving the best help possible. Methods that have been heavily researched can be put to use in healthcare settings to give us the best chance and best results in healing our patients. Knowledge is power in the nursing field and we have it in abundance; putting this knowledge to good use is crucial to being a great nurse.

A great nurse needs to be an effective communicator, we need to be team players and leaders. Contributing to collaborative cultures in our work environment has been discussed, and is a key component in the nursing and healthcare fields. Keeping your team happy and comfortable with both you and each other means that they will work together in a safe, effective manner. Being alert to the context of situations we are in, as well as being problem solvers that can handle anything that comes our way will ensure that our staff and patients know they are in capable hands. Being a leader also helps a team work towards a common goal, immersing yourself and working alongside your team is both time efficient and motivational! This builds trust and can lead to a better environment that nurtures solid communication all around.

Critical Thinking

Learning about critical thinking descriptors and how to put them into practice can be vital to being a great nurse. We need to be genuine and authentic in everything we do, it builds trust with our team and with our patients. Another set of important critical thinking skills are confidence and resilience, these skills show that we are sure of ourselves and of our skill set and can bounce back from things we have to overcome and problems we may face along our journey.

Scope of Practice

A Great Nurse's Journey

An important attribute of a great nurse is one who knows their scope of practice and sticks to it. We need to know when it is safe to expand our knowledge and learn new things, but keep in mind what we can and cannot do. A great nurse knows their capabilities, but also knows when something is out of bounds to them based on both the rules of the establishment in which they are employed and the laws set by the state they are practicing in. This is key to having a great and long lived nursing career!

History

The first thing that we need to keep in mind is where we started. This gives all nurses a base point to begin with and use to keep us on track. The nursing field has a rich history, from Florence Nightingale setting standards for healthy nursing environments to Patricia Banner showing nurses everywhere how to rate their experience level and understand their scope of practice.
