Philipp hat nen kleinen Pimmel
Before WW1
-Kurds were independent in ottoman empire times
-After the fall of the ottoman empire the Kurds didn't get an own country and were separated from each other
Turkeys supressed Kurds
-Kurds weren't allowed to speak their own language/have their own media (Treaty of Lausanne)
PKK and its Goals
-PKK was created by Abdullah Öcalan
-> no own language, no own culture,
no own media until 1991
organisation (and so does the EU)
-> Turkish troops attacked Kurdish
regions
-> up to this day roughly 43.000 dead Kurds (also innocent people killed)
-PKK wants to give the Kurds an own state
-36.000-60.000 dead
-Öcalan got in prison --> more peaceful
-2011-2014 the PKK and the Turkish government met
-Still fighting between them
Kurdish influence on Turkey's politics
July 2015:
-20th, Assault in Suruc
-22nd, two turkish police officers killed
Turkey's politics regarding IS conflict:
- a large fraction of Turkey’s Kurdish community openly sympathises with PKK rebels
-22.5 million Kurds (out of 75-million population)
-basic political and cultural rights denied (political autonomy only realistic long-term solution)
Kerem Oktem: Turkey politics is pretending that it is waging a war against IS, at the same time trying to destroy the PKK
PKK leader Cemil Bayik: By bombarding PKK positions/strongholds Turkey is supporting the advance of IS
To what extent does the conflict between Turks and Kurds influence today's turkey politics?
