  • On July 1, 1988, the Boards of both Clark College and Atlanta University made the historic decision to consolidate the two institutions, creating Clark Atlanta University.
  • Dr. Thomas W. Cole Jr. Became the first President of Clark Atlanta University.

1976

in 1976, Henry "Hank" C. Johnson graduated from Clark College. Johnson is the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 4th congressional district, serving since 2007. He is a member of the Democratic Party, and his district is based in DeKalb County.

2002

In 2002, Dr.Walter D. Broadnax became the second president of Clark Atlanta University. He served as Professor of Public Administration at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, until he came to Clark.

1951

In 1951, Ralph David Abernathy enrolled in graduate school at Atlanta University. Ralph David Abernathy was a leader of the Civil Rights Movement, a minister, and a close colleague of Martin Luther King, Jr.

In 1869, Clark College was founded by the Freedmen's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, which later became the United Methodist Church.

In 1997, Emmanuel Lewis graduated from Clark Atlanta University. He is best known for playing the title character in the 1980's television sitcom 'Webster.'

In 1894,James Weldon Johnson graduated from Atlanta University. After graduating, James Weldon Johnson went on to become a teacher, poet, songwriter, and civil rights activist.

In 2008, Dr. Carlton E. Brown became the third president of Clark Atlanta University. He served as president of Savannah State University from July 1, 1997 until December 31, 2006 before he came to Clark.

1865

In 1865, Atlanta University was founded by the American Missionary Association.
