The Modern Education System
What is the purpose of education?
What is education?
- "The purpose of education SHOULD be to make people think critically and problem solve." -Mr. D
- "The purpose of education is to train up our future generations so they will be well prepared for the future and won't make the same mistakes that we did in the past and they will be successful in life." - Mr. T
Why there are problems with education
- "Education is teaching people and learning new things and getting them ready for the future." -Mr. Thompson
- According to dictionary.com - "the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.
- Teaching others in a efficient way how to think critically and learn valuable and applicable things for life.
What are the problems in education today?
What should be done about the educational system?
According to Mr D.
- standardized testing
- kids don't want to think critically
- teachers aren't trained well enough to teach critically
- kids cram because they will be just tested and they don't actually retain the info they learned
- learning useless facts
-system worked in the past, times have changed
-before going to school was working hard and getting good grades then you would get a job
-now we are not guaranteed a job
-our system is designed for a certain kind of thought system and learning style
-our culture has an ideal mindset, but many kids don't have it and believe they are dumb
- We are teaching kids to reach a standard of memorization and testing not think creatively or critically think
-we are taught that there is one answer to every problem and we just need to memorize it not think about it or understand the concept about it
According to Mr. Thompson
- too many kids in the classroom
- schools don't have the resources that they need
- the kids aren't motivated
- too many distractions
What we think some of the problems within the modern education system are
- too focused on memorizing facts in order to receive a grade rather than retaining practical ideas that can be applied to daily life
- It's gotten to a point that has driven young people in school to live an unhealthy/unmotivated lifestyle
- lack of sleep because of excessive amounts of work
- kids become unmotivated because of the overwhelming amount of information
- on a spiritual level - maintaining a healthy spiritual life is often put to the side because school is too time consuming
- stress - the constant feeling of being "stress out" is NOT a healthy lifestyle
- Homework - this is a problem because it's an unessential part of learning.
- We are in the school building 7 hours a day 5 days a week...extra work beyond this on adds to the amount of stress
- People's gifts/talents are often pushed to the side rather than embraced and encouraged
Mr. D-"The whole educational system needs to go. We need to change things significantly. I don't know what that looks like but it can't continue to look like it does now. Kids are just memorizing useless facts for test and then forgetting them the next day. We need to teach kids how to think critically and be problem solvers."
If you where to revamp the educational system, how would you do it?
How we would revamp the education system
Solution
Mr. D- "the reason behind teaching kids certain things need to be examined and rethought. Are the things they are learning going to be beneficial to them once they leave the school building. Why do the kids need to know slope intercept form? But it is important for them to be able to predict patterns. For example if they are a business owner its important for them to be able to look and predict what their sells will look like in 3 months. So, the way we are teaching needs to be more practical."
- Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. - Einstein
Points of View
- What do you WANT to do?
- What do you EXCELL in?
- What is your area of GENIUS?
- Taking what your good at and within school you're given the opportunities to share your skill
- still graded
- "normal" education up through 8th grade
- after 8th grade you branch off into different classes based off your interest
- no homework
- kind of like a pre-college experience
- why are we waiting so long to apply the things we enjoy/the things we're good at in daily life?
- why not get head start on it?
- why learn useless details when instead you can be training to change the world in what GOD has gifted you in?
