A quick summary of Athenian government
proposed laws approved by group named assembly
ya gotta be 18+ to be a citizen, all of the citizens could participate in government. Women weren't citizens.
girls grew up helping their mothers around the house, girls usually married around 15
in strength, they were strong, healthy, and ready to fight. A woman was supposed to look after her husbands property in times of war. She also had to guard it against invaders and revolts from slaves. In fact spartan women had tons more of rights that other Greek women, for example: they can freely speak with her husbands friends , they could own and control their own property, they could even marry another man if her husband was away at war for too long
Spartan boys lived and trained in barracks. by the way, boys were also taught to read and write, but Spartans did not consider that important, what was important was to be a brave soldier. In fact, Spartan boys were taught to suffer any amount of physical pains without complaining, they marched without shoes, and weren't even fed well. the fun part though they were encouraged to steal food as long as they did not get caught.
Spartan women lived the same plain life as Spartan men, they didn't wear makeup or jewelry or stuff like that
at the age of
were given a very hard test of fitness, military ability, and leadership skills, if the passed, they become spartan soldiers and full citizens, but even then, they ate, slept, and trained with their classmates
Athens: Religion and philosophy
or so, spartan men
Sparta has one weird fact. There were more helots than Spartans in Sparta, and because of that, Spartans were afraid that they would revolt, so the helots were treated very harshly, and sometimes even, the government declared war on the helots so that they could legally kill any slaves they thought would rebel
Athens uses a form of government called democracy , in democracy all citizens share power, in short words everybody can vote
Sadly for the men, they couldn't live with their wife and family till the age of 30, and their military service continued long after that.
Once the spartan government asked the helots to choose their best fighters. The Spartans said that those men would be set free as thanks for fighting for Sparta. 2,000 helots were chosen, IMMEDIATELY, the Spartans killed them all to eliminate any future helot leaders
any babies that didnt look strong...... were left to die on the hillside
Spartans discouraged trade with other city-states because they feared that contact with other city-states would lead to new ideas and weaken their government. Also trading with Sparta was hard anyway, because of there money system, they used iron rods instead of coins.
Spartans loved discipline and strength. from the age of 7, ALL Spartan kids, boys and girls, were trained to fight. They learned: wrestling, boxing, footracing, and gymnastics
Athenians made money by trade . their marketplace is called the agora. cash: athens made their own money to make trade easier, coins wer made of gold, silver, or bronze,
Spartans turned the people they conquered into slaves, they still lived in their little villages, but they had to give most of the food they grew to the Spartans. The slaves were called helots
The Spartans made money farming and conquering other people.
Sparta's government system is known as oligarchy. In a oligarchy , ruling power is in the hands of a small amount of people. Sparta also has an assembly, a group of governors. but all the important decisions were really made by a small group called The Council Of Elders. For men to be elected to the Council of Elders, they have to be over 60 years of age and have to come from a noble family. The odd thing is, once there elected, they serve for LIFE, can you believe it?
The Council Of Elders held the true power in Sparta : it prepared laws for the assembly to vote on. The council had the power to stop any laws passed by the assembly that they didn't ike. The assembly was made up of male citizens, and because the assembly was big, it met in a big outdoor place away from the center of the city. However, the assembly had little power. the assembly couldn't even discuss issues.... all they did was vote yes or no.
