The American Revolution Timeline By: Austin J Portner

January 3, 1777-

February 6, 1778-

Washington defeats British at the battle of Princeton. It drives them back toward New Brunswick and finally Washington is able to establish his winter camp at Morris town, New Jersey. After the harsh winter Washington's army is shrunk to only 1000 men with all the people that left after their enlistments expired and all the people who died. But by the spring new recruits arrive and he eventually has 9000 men.

December 23, 1783- Following a journey from New York to Annapolis, George Washington victorious commander during the Revolutionary War steps down and resigns his commission.

America and the French sign two treaties in Paris which leads to the French being a major ally in the war. They become a huge supplier of military supplies and both of the countries pledge to fight until the American win their independence. This also gets Spain into the war as a French ally and now England has no choice but to declare war on those too countries and the Dutch who have been trading with the French and Americans. This also forces the British to send troops to fight in these countries too which weakens their forces in America.

December 27, 1776

April 11, 1783-

Congress officially declared the Revolutionary war to be over.

October 19, 1781

October 7, 1777

The British army marches out and surrenders at Yorktown. Hope for a British victory vanish and the British begin to discuss ending the war.

The Battle of Saratoga was the first major American victory of the war. General Gates and General Benedict Arnold defeated General Burgoyne after the British casualties reached 600 and the Americans only 150. This news travels quickly around the world and boosts support of the American cause . France then finally recognizes the Independence of America.

October 17, 1781

As Yorktown is about to be taken by the Americans the British send out a flag of truce. Americans then work an agreement for the British to surrender.

February 23, 1778-

Baron von Steuben of Prussia arrives during the cold, hard winter at Valley Forge. He begins the much needed training of Washington's troops who are lacking the skills to defeat the British.

September 28, 1781

Washington with his army of 17,000 men being to siege Yorktown. The French release cannons on General Cornwallis and his 9000 men. Americans begin slowly circling the British and the British supplies are running low.

After losing New York to the British Washington needed to turn things around. Washington and his troops cross the Delaware river and go to Trenton. Their they battle the Hessians on Christmas morning, finding most of them sleeping. The Americans capture and kill over 8000 Hessians. This raised the spirits of the Americans after losing New York.

May 12, 1780

The worst defeat of the war for the Americans happen as the British capture Charlestown. They capture the Americans entire Southern Army along with four ships and military supplies. British loses only 225 men.

September 23, 1779

John Paul Jones is off the coast off England and is in a desperate battle with a British war ship. When the British calls out to John to surrender he says, “I have not yet begun to fight!” Jones then captures the British ship before his own ship sinks.

July 4, 1776

The second continental congress adopts the Declaration of Independence which set the American colonies free from British rule.

April 18, 1775

The British governor of Massachusetts sends hundreds of British troops to steal and destroy military supplies at Concord. The Patriots soon found out about this and tried to stop this and the British succeeded in destroying some of the military supplies. But after they destroyed the supplies, militiamen forced them to retreat to Boston. This was considered by many people one of the first battle of the war.
