Origins

Mentor is known to be a son of a different person in each story he takes a role in. Specifically in the odyssey he is a son of Alcimus.

Mentor

What happened during that time?

In Greek mythology, Mentor was a loyal friend and adviser to Odysseus, king of Ithaca. Mentor helped raise Odysseus' son, Telemachus, while Odysseus was away fighting the Trojan War. Mentor became Telemachus' teacher, coach, counselor and protector, building a relationship based on affection and trust. Mentor was almost like a second dad to Telemachus.

Athena as Mentor

In the end

During Mentors time being at Ithaka Athena comes and visits to take form of multiple people. She turns into her natural form and explains that she will always be there to guide him in doubt and shield him in battle. She also takes on Mentor's figure to talk to him. At the end of the Odyssey, the war goddess enhances Laertes' looks for his reunion with his son Odysseus. In the final scene, she takes up the form of Mentor once more to bring peace to the bickering people.

Now to the end of the story when Odysseus joined the alliance that sailed against Troy, he left Mentor in charge of keeping his household safe. But Odysseus stayed away too long, ten years passed and the suitors thought of him as dead. With no king like Odysseus around the things in the kingdom began to change for the worst. Athena took shape as Mentor and went on a journey with Telemachus to Pylos and Sparta, where he went to gather news about his father. The real Mentor stayed at Ithaka and soon helped Odysseus in the finale battle between him and the suitors.
