Soil

Differences between a biome and Ecosystem?

The difference between an ecosystem and biome is that an ecosystem is the interaction between biotic and abiotic factors.

Biotic Vs. Abiotic Factors

Biotic factors are the living factors that make up the ecosystem. Examples are animals and plants. Abiotic Factors are the nonliving factors that exist in the ecosystem. Examples are soil, rocks, temperature, sunlight, and water.

Biomes move as the climate changes.

In most biomes when it is fall the leaves fall, when it is winter the land is either covered in ice or snow. In the spring the piedmont is recovering from the fall and winter. The trees are growing back their leaves and plants are sprouting.

Transition zones between biomes

An ecotone, also knowns as an edge effect, is a transition between two biomes. This is when two biomes pass into one another. This usually is during the clearing of forests. affects the population of animals. There is usually a large population of a few different species. It is a lot larger this way.

A. In North Carolina we have many biomes.

We have the piedmont, marine, costal plains, mountains, fresh water, tidal/estuaries, anthropogenic urban and agriculture. We have a very wide variety of biomes an are very luck, becuase most states don't have as many.

B. Every ecosystem needs biodiversity to survive. Bio diversity is an indicator tat shows the enviornment is healthy. The more differnt types of animals/species the better the biome. They each have a niche that keeps it healthy and running.

Flora

Two Debatable Questions

Do biomes effect us just

as much as we effect them?

Are we causing harm to biomes

or are they causing harm to us?

Although the most soil of the Piedmont have been derived from similar parent material to those of the mountains, they have been exposed to higher temperatures and more severe chemical weathering.

The red soil: Red clay can be very productive although they need frequent attention to ensure that the clays do not become dominant.

Most Common Flora: Beech

My Backyard

This affects us, because it is good

for agricultural purposes. It also gives

us lumber and employs people into lumberjack jobs. It affects how we have to build things.

Human Impact

Human impact, humans have been studying the piedmont for over 150 years. Population growth caused a landshift from terraces to floodplains.

We have also had an impact on the soil properties. We litter, reduce carbon content, and nitrogen. Some of these chemicals are what make the soil rich and healthy. Without them the plants will not be able to grow very well.

Transitions b/w Biomes

Biodiversity

Biodiversity, there are many types of

animals in the piedmont. See fauna

for a list of species.

Deciduous Forests

Lumber Industry

Coniferous Forests

Coniferous forests are also present in the piedmont.

These are your evergreens, the ones that don’t have leaves falling off of them. (Your christmas trees)

Lumber Industry, there are lumberjacks which cut down the trees.

A few industries in the NC piedmont produce yellow pine lumber. They use huge saw mills to do this.

Decidous Forests are present in the piedmont.

They go through season changes and move through climate changes. The leaves fall and they grow back in the springtime.
