Prefontaine died in a DWI May 30, 1975 when he was leaving a party. He was driving a orange 1973 MGB convertible when he swerved into rock that flipped crushing Prefontaine. A race Prefontaine was going to compete in, was exactly a week after he died. Prefontaine was only 24 when he past away.

Prefontaine joined the cross country team in High School. In his freshman and sophomore years he managed to get a mile time of 5:01. He placed 53rd in the State Championship. He took it upon himself to work hard over the summer, and he became a very aggressive runner

How it all Began
Steve Prefontaine was born January 25th 1951 in the small coastal town of Coos Bay, Oregon. In Junior High he played basketball, and football, but rarely got to play because of he was really small.
It all began in 1975, when it was originally called the Hayward Field Restoration Race. The name was changed after legendary University of Oregon long distance runner Steve Prefonaine.
