Antagonist

Protagonist

Gregor was transformed into a bug, Kafka uses the transformation as a symbol for Gregor's metamorphosis towards humanity. Before Gregor's transformation, he only lived to serve others as in helping his family out in every way he could, but through his metamorphosis Gregor slowly comes to meet his own desires seeking more personal independence and even coming to like or in a way appreciating music, and art more. It is through Gregor's final understanding of love for his family that truly shows the human insect he truly is. Kafka uses the symbolism of Gregor becoming a bug to represent the tragedy of the life that Gregor was leading, it also symbolizes a more gradual metamorphosis towards an individual humanity, physically taking Gregor from humanity. By transforming into a bug, Gregor's metamorphosis into something more than human, not less. The bug that Gregor becomes purpose is not taken as a symbol of inhumanity, but rather it is humanity.

Quotes

A major antagonist in the novella that ultimately ties into the falling action and conclusion of the book is the apple. This apple is the downfall of Gregor and causes stress on him. it is a symbol of strife and death in the novella.

Another antagonist in the novella is the setting of Gregors room and the home he lives. It causes him to put himself away from the world and keeps him from being with his family.

His father is also a major antagonist because he throws the apple that leads to the demise of Gregor. He is characterized as inconsiderate and unloving towards Gregor
