What does ATSDR do?
- Identifies how people might be exposed to hazardous substances
ATSDR PHA Process
Who are the people exposed?
- Assess exposures to chemicals and determines if the exposures are hazardous to human health
How are these people exposed?
How long did the exposure last?
- Work with communities, environmental groups, tribal goverments and local, state
and federal agencies to protect public health
How often did the exposure occur?
How much of the chemical were people exposed to?

Public Health Assessment Process
1. Review environmental data from a site
2. Identify ways people might come in contact
through soil, water, air
3. Determine if people are being exposed
4. How exposure might affect public health
(not harmful, can not be determined, harmful)
5. Provide conclusions and recommendations
