Arizona's College and Career Ready Standards - English Language Arts
Look impossible???
“Master teachers spend more time unpacking standards and objectives than they do planning learning activities because they understand that clear learning goals will drive everything else they do.”
Thank you for reviewing my

all of you in my cohort!

We'll open up the standards to see what's inside.
Book Report Project
Standard: Range of Writing
Step 1 - Select a biography from the library that you would like to read.
Step 2 - Give me the name and author of the book. I will confirm that your book is within your lexile range. We can work together to find a different book if the lexile is far outside of your range. No worries!
Step 3 - Write a carefully constructed 5 paragraph book report. The grading rubric you have been given should be attached to the final draft of your report.

Activity 1 - Unpacking a Standard

"Standards" What do they mean?
But wait... there's more!
Get the boxes. We have some unpacking to do!
"Range of Writing (6.W.10)
Write routinely over extended time frames... and shorter time frames... for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences."
Remember me???
Why did I choose these standards?
6th Grade English
Language Arts Standards
Why 6th Grade???
- Literature feeds my spirit
- I didn't know I loved reading and writing until I was an adult
- The value of bringing passion into a classroom cannot be measured
- Helping students to understand bodies of literary works (books - fiction and nonfiction, essays, poetry...) is rewarding and challenging
- Writing is a way to liberate thoughts, expressions, and journeys - sharing these skills, exposing students to their own abilities is a pretty incredible undertaking
- I readily commit to mastering the art of teaching these skills to students

Everyone's different, but for me, middle school is where it's at! It is a time of chaos and change...
I have an opportunity to reach out to students and hopefully inspire them to realize their potential.
I love learning and I am okay with being "wrong." Learning is a life-long process... I want to catch them during these formative years!
