- important to rule out other illnesses
- medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests
- commonly abused drugs may cause symptoms resembling schizophrenia, blood or urine samples should be tested at hospitals or physicians' offices for the presence of these drugs

Forms of Schizophrenia

- First described by Dr Emil Krapelin in the 19th century
- Krapelin’s understanding of schizophrenia was pioneering in the way that he distinguished it from other disorders
- A French naval surgeon,Laboret, experimented with a new drug called chlorpromazine. This was the first of the new drugs that were to become known as the antipsychotics
Incidence
- Paranoid schizophrenia -extremely suspicious, persecuted, or grandiose, or experiences a combination of these emotions.
- Disorganized schizophrenia - incoherent in speech and thought, but may not have delusions.
- Catatonic schizophrenia -withdrawn, mute, negative and often assumes very unusual body positions.
- Residual schizophrenia - no longer experiencing delusions or hallucinations, but has no motivation or interest in life.
- Schizoaffective disorder- symptoms of both schizophrenia and a major mood disorder such as depression.
- 1 percent of the population
- more than 2 million Americans suffer from the illness in a given year
- Appears earlier in men than in women, who are generally affected in the twenties to early thirties
- Children over the age of five can develop schizophrenia, but it is very rare before adolescence

Prevention
- most likely transmitted genetically
- probably involves an imbalance in neurological chemicals (abnormal brain structure)
- Exposure to viruses
- Malnutrition before birth
- Problems during birth
- Psychosocial factors
There's no sure way to prevent schizophrenia.
