What is the Jazz age?

How it started?

The Jazz Age was a cultural period during the 1920s, where new styles of music and Dance became very popular. The Jazz age began after WWI and ended shortly before the Great Depression. The Jazz Age wasn't only a period for musical expansion but also for artistic expansion. New art style emerged during this time, some of the popular styles being Art deco, Expressionism, and surrealism. The Jazz Age also meant a life that was more carefree. The term Jazz Age was developed by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The Jazz musical style was created by African Americans by incorporating new musical techniques with traditional african styles. It began to spread during the Great Migration when African Americans from rural cities in the south like New Orleans and the southwest to northeastern cities like New York City to get jobs and to avoid Jim Crow laws. Jazz soon expanded to the white middle class and led to a mix of African American culture into the white middle class. The emergence of Jazz clubs during this time led to Prohibition, but in spite of that the use of alcohol and cigarettes increased during this time.

Some of the greatest influential figures in music during this time period were Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong because not only were the great artists but they paved the way for other artists in the industry. Because of the change in clothing style for women, Coco Chanel was a popular designer as she was the first designer to make pants for women and she popularized the "boyish"/flapper style for women. Norman Rockwell was an artist known for his depictions of small town american culture.

Jazz in the Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby took place right after the first world war in the 1920s right when the Jazz Age was in full swing. In many of Jay Gatsby's parties featured the use of Jazz music as it was the most popular style of music during that time period. Because this was the time of alcohol prohibition, Gatsby is shown have tons of alcohol for his guest to drink while attending his party despite the use of alcohol being illegal.
