Government

Cuisine

In this time period women were not allowed to vote, and the patricians (wealthy people) were strictly seperated from the plebeians (lower class) citizens. These laws were all based on tradition. Eventually plebeians were able to elect their own representatives called tribunes. The laws of rome were carved into twelve tablets which is why they were called "The Twelve Tablets". These laws stated that women remain in guardianship even when they attained their majority, a spendshift is forbidden to exercise administration over his own goods. These tablets also stated that if a mans fruit falls on the neighbouring lawn the neighbour has the right to claim that fruit as his own, if someone were to insult anyone they shall be clubbed to death, and and any deformed children must be quickly killed.

Breakfast was usually some bread with optional topping of dates and honey. At about 11:00 am lunch would be held. Lunch would usually consist of bread, cheese, and maybe some meat. The biggest meal of the day was called "Cena". This meal enjoyed alone would usually last about an hour. However if enjoyed with guests it could last upwards of about 4 hours. During this meal sauces would be served to spice up the food. An ancient Rome dish called Baked Dormice was minced meat, herbs, pepper, and pine nuts stuffed into the dormice and baked.

Social Structure

Architecture

Emperors were the only ones allowed to wear a purple toga, and senators were the only ones that wore white toga with a thin purple stripe. There was a system call "Patronage" . Patronage means the upper class offered protection to the plebeians in terms of money, food, and legal help. The plebieans had to work for the patricians to earn these benefits. The whole social structure was based on property, wealth, heredity, citizenship, and freedom.

Many roman architecture was based off of the previous Greek architecture. With the addition of new architectural styles like basilica, aqueducts, triumphant arc, and an ampitheatre. Some popular buildings from this time period include the pantheon, Arch of Agustus, and the Pont Du Gard.

The Pont Du Gard provided an aqueduct system for the city of Rome.

Beliefs and Customs

The citizens of Rome believed in spirits/gods that watched over Rome. Some of these Gods include Mars "The god of War", Jupiter "the supreme God", and Quirinus who watched over Rome. There are many cults including Bacchus, Cybele, Isis, Sarapis, and Sybil. These cults were quickly accepted by the Roman society but were feared by those in power. However some of the emperors thought of themselves as gods such as Caligula, and Nero.
