What I Learned/ How it Helps Understand How the System Works
I've never heard of Tropical Sprue before, but I learned that it's most common in tropical areas, hence the name. How it's caused, the inflammation of the small intestines due to an unknown bacterial overgrowth in the intestines, that takes place in Tropical areas. I also learned that the disease was founded in 1759, by William Hillary who was in Barbados when he got the disease. Thankfully this is not a deadly disease unless you're an infant that isn't given any help, there are plenty of medications that help rid the disease. Learning about this disease helped me understand that the small intestines are more important than they seem, once they aren't functioning properly it throws the entire body off, and how the small intestines are sensitive to certain environments, you need to be cautious of what you're drinking and eating, making sure it doesn't harm the small intestine. The digestive system can normally fight off most things, but as seen in Tropical Sprue, sometimes the bacteria overthrows it, and it needs certain medications. The digestive system depends on everything in it, including the small intestine, which I never thought of as something that's very importat, clearly I was proven wrong.
Where The Disease Is Most Common/ Statistics
Part of the Digestive System Being Effected
Tropical Sprue is most common in areas such as, the Caribbean, Central and South America, India, and Southeast Asia. There were no statistics of where in the world most of its cases are reported.
The small intestine is being effected by having too much bacteria.
How Common Is The Disease
Long Term Health Problems
The disease isn't common unless you live in a tropical area. Therefore it's uncommon.
Those At Risk of Getting Disease & How It Develops
Treatment
Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies in adults.
For children it can delay bone development and growth.
Prevention
You're most likely going to get the disease if you live in a tropical area or if you've been on a lengthy vacation in a tropical location.
The disease develops by an overgrowth of a unknown bacteria in the small intestines, causing it to inflame.
There's no actual found way of preventing tropical sprue, aside from avoiding tropical areas. Or if you do venture to a warm climate area use only bottled water to prevent any bacterias.
The way you treat Tropical Sprue is with antibiotics, the most efficient and common antibiotic is Tetracycline. After the bacteria killed you will need to be treated for Malabsorption, which is when one has a difficulty consuming the nutrients in foods. A doctor will most likely provide the patient with fluids and electrolytes, iron, folate, or vitamin B-12.
