-Audism is a serious issue upon members of the Deaf community. It can be a problem among friends, in the work place, and often in school settings.

-oralism is often supported by hearing people, encouraging deaf students to become a part of the hearing world.

-many hearing parents who have Deaf children will have their children be taught oralism so their child can easily function in society, also, speaking is what they consider to be “normal”.

-a huge downfall of this method is that it doesn’t give students an opportunity to become a part of the Deaf community (a community that only uses sign language as a way of communication). It has become much less popular become of the Deaf community fighting against it.

-In the movie “Audism Unveiled”, a student was asked in real life a question by a teacher. The student signed to her interpreter the answer. The interpreter thought the student was wrong so she answered what she thought was correct. The teacher told the student she was wrong, however she knew it was the correct answer. She asked the girl next to her what was going on, because she knew her answer was correct. She then realized that the interpreter had switched her answer.

-Interpreters are to translate EXACTLY what the person says, however, Interpreters can often cause problems

Mainstream:

-Mainstream schools can sometimes be a good choice for a Deaf child because it forces them to become a part of the hearing world. However, many people from the Deaf community are against this.

Residential:

-Residential schools give the child an opportunity to become of their own community, the Deaf community.

-It gives the child an opportunity to use the easiest mode of communication.

-It gives the child to see what is capable of a Deaf person in a mostly hearing world.

-It shows gives the child “Deaf Pride”.

The teachers sign language was different, it was more English than Sign Language. One day, the boy went home and told his Deaf parents that they sign wrong. After growing up he realized that he was using English and not ASL.

-This is an example of Audism because the hearing teachers wouldn’t accept their language and thought English was superior.

In 1880, the Second Congress of Educators of Deaf-Mutes in Milan passed a resolution saying that the pure oral method was the one that should be preferred in the education of deaf children.

Many Deaf people claimed that being in an environment where you are not allowed to sign was extremely frustrating and is one of the biggest factors in the incidence of mental health problems among Deaf people.

Audism is not to be taken lightly in the Deaf community and can highly effect a childs self-esteem.

Audism in Deaf Schools

Intro

-Audism is the notion that one is superior based on one's ability to hear or to behave in the manner of one who hears, or that life without hearing is futile and miserable, or an attitude based on pathological thinking which results in a negative stigma toward anyone who does not hear.

Methods Of Teaching

-oralism: the system of teaching deaf people to communicate by the use of speech and lip-reading rather than sign language.

-this method of teaching does not allow students to sign in the classroom

Interpreters

-The role of a Sign Language Interpreter is to translate American Sign Language effectively and precisely to English, and English to American Sign Language.

Mainstream Vs. Residential

-Many hearing parents are often faced with the decision whether to send the Deaf child to a mainstream or residential school. Often times when hearing parents do not seek advice on this situation, they tend to choose a mainstream school so their child can become a part of the hearing community. However, children can often feel left out when put in a mainstream school because they are different from the other students and are less likely to become social.

Teachers Changing ASL to English

-In one situation in the movie “Audism Unveiled”, a student told a story where he was at school and began to sign, the teacher became upset with him and told him never to sign again. The boy went a long time without signing in class until one day the teacher said that it was okay, however, the teachers would only allow it if they signed their way.

Deaf History

In the past, being Deaf was looked at as being handicapped or what is commonly known as “Deaf and Dumb”. If you were Deaf, you were seen as unintelligent. Deaf people were discriminated against.

Conclusion

Audism has been seen many times throughout Deaf Education. Whether it was the use of oralism, not accepting the use of ASL, or Interpreters not effectively doing their job, Deaf people have been belittled throughout the years.
