Awards
- He had been nominated 35 times for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, but never won.
- Gilbert received Service Medal during World War I for his work and leadership.
- He received Willard Gibbs Award and Davy Medal.
Gilbert N. Lewis is known for:
- Covalent bond
- Lewis dot structures
- Valence bond theory
- Electronic theory of acids and bases
- Chemical thermodynamics
- Heavy water
- Named photon
- Explained phosphorescence
- Gilbert Newton Lewis was born on October 23, 1875 – March 23, 1946, in West Newton, Massachusetts.
- He received his early education at home. His family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska.
- He attended the University of Nebraska and later transferred to Harvard University, from which he received Ph.D in 1899.
- Later moved to California to teach chemistry at the University of California.
Contributions
- He discovered the covalent bond and the concept of electron pairs.
- Gilbert successfully contributed to thermodynamics, photochemistry, and isotope separation, and is known for his concept of acids and bases as well.
- He also proposed the theory of bonding and gave information about electrons in the periodic table of elements.
- In 1926, he came up with the term "photon" for the smallest unit of radiant energy.
