Transhuman Congress

"The sniper took a deep, long breath, then picked one bullet out of her case. It was labeled "Pnth-1" on the casing. There were three others in her case, but she only needed this one right now.

The Pnth models had been recognized 13 days ago as people by the Transhuman Congress, and many individuals -- this entity included -- were moving quickly to integrate themselves in human society. Like so many models before them, they quickly threw away decades of culture, of model identity, in their sick lust for humanity."

Exploit: Zero Day

  • A social hacking puzzle game with cyberpunk themes and a focus on roleplaying dilemmas
  • Original Exploit made about $2500 in sponsorships, not including ad revenue, and was played over 1.5 million times
  • Zero Day lets you build and share puzzles in the service of mysterious story and difficult choices.
  • Planned to be free to play without abusive or deceptive things to buy; that means we need lots of players
  • Made in HTML5 using Phaser, Django, and Sass with Discourse as our forum

Ossuary and Greenlight

  • We released Ossuary around Thanksgiving 2013
  • Initially sold (for $5) through Humble Widget
  • Now on Desura, IndieGameStand, and Humble Store
  • Doing a Steam Greenlight campaign ( http://fpgam.es/OssGreen )
  • Greenlight is weird; ~6,000 visitors in 74 days, 28% "Yes" votes, 23% of the way to the top 100

The Vision of Future Proof Games

  • "We seek to create games that will remain relevant for years, decades, and centuries."
  • Transhumanism inspires games that explore how people can change and what they might become
  • Audacious compassion inspires games that make you empathize with the alien and the monstrous

Gregory's Style

  • Mood and feeling as a focus of the experience

Melissa's Style

  • Complex worlds with lots of available "hooks" for story
  • Strong, multidimensional, memorable characters
  • Mixture of light and dark themes sharing space
  • Focus on users' experience

Melissa's Evolution

Gregory's Growth

  • Interested in business: planning, finances, marketing
  • Still working a day job: time is at a premium
  • How do I develop my worlds, characters, plots into gameplay and mechanics?
  • For years, did flash sponsorship: make a flash game, get money for putting in a flash portal's branding
  • Supplemented by pre-game and on-page ad revenue
  • Marketing is hard.
  • I longed to be in control of the business process.
