Genetics

dissecting cats is bad, don't do that.

Munchkin cats have a Lethal Homozygous Gene, meaning that they can only have one 'munchkin' gene, or they will die before they are born. They can have one munchkin-breed parent, but if they have both munchkin-breed parents, the kitten will not live. It is a dominant recessive gene, so it is hereditary. A Heterozygous munchkin cat also has a chance of having Munchkin kittens.

What To Do:

THE END

What's a Munchkin Cat?

Punnett Squares

This is a Punnett Square showing the genotype for a kitten who had one munchkin breed parent, and one non-munchkin breed parent. There is a 50% chance the kitten would be the munchkin breed, and a 50% it would be a non-munchkin breed.

KEY:

A Munchkin Cat is a rare breed of cat, the phenotype has very short arms and legs, as well as a very long tail, almost the size of it's body. They can have many traits from other breeds, including color, as well as size. All munchkin cats are hybrids from other breeds.

M- Munchkin Gene

m-non Munchkin gene

This is a crossed Punnett Square for a kitten with two Homozygous dominant Munchkin genes. There is a 25% the kitten would not be born alive, a 50% it would be born a Munchkin Breed, and a 25% chance it would be born a non-munchkin breed cat.

cats!

The Breeder should mate one munchkin cat with another breed of cat, depending on Tammy’s preference for color and size. If each cat has about four cats per litter, Tammy can expect two munchkin kittens, and two, NON-munchkin breed kittens, which she will not adopt. Because she is mean.

Tammy wants to adopt 4 Munchkin kittens from a breeder. The breeder has 3 munchkin cats, (2 female and 1 male) out of her 16 cats. Tammy wants a full breed munchkin cat, and thinks the breeder should pair the male munchkin cat with one of the female munchkin cats, but the breeder needs to explain to her why this can’t happen. The breeder also has to explain why Tammy cannot possibly get 4 munchkin cats if both the females typically only have 4-5 kittens total in each litter. Tammy is not well educated on Munchkin cats. How many kittens can Tammy expect if she wants them all from the same litter? Who should the breeder mate the cats with?
