Where do the world's refugees come from?
For more than 3 decades Afghanistan has been the largest source of refugees. By mid-2014, there were in fact more than 3 million refugees from Afghanistan.
Syria has become the second largest refugee group with 2.7 million refugees under UNHCR’s mandate.
Somalia is the third largest source of refugees with 1.1 million people, followed by Sudan.
Syria
In 1918, France was given control over Syria. France controlled Syria until 1946. That year Syria became independent.
Syria was part of the United Arab Republic with Egypt in 1958-1961 and it was at war with Israel in the following years.
In 2012 with the Arab Spring a violent civil war began against President Bashar Al Assad.
The population of Syria is 74% Sunni, 12% Alawi, 10% Christian, and 3% Druze
Afghanistan
Afghanistan has only been a republic between 1973 and 1992 and from 2001 onwards. Before 1973, it was a monarchy. From 1992 to 2001, during the civil war, the country was recognized as the Islamic State of Afghanistan and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
Pashtuns constitute 40% of Afghanistan's population and they largerly dominate Afghan politics. Tajiks are the second largest ethnic group.
Libya
Under the rule of Qaddafi, Libya was an authoritarian state. Qaddafi’s original revolutionary cabinet was replaced in 1977 by the General People’s Committee. The secretary of the General People’s Committee served as the head of government. Following the 2011 uprising, a transitional council made up of opposition forces assumed leadership. Insecurity and factional rivalries soon became the main obstacles to the establishment of a stable permanent government.
A refugee camp is a temporary settlement built to receive refugees. In 2012 the average-sized camps housed around 11,400 people. Usually they are built and run by a government, the United Nations, or international organisations. There are also official refugee camps where refugees are largely left without support of goverments or international organisations.
Refugee camps generally develop with the aim of meeting basic human needs for a short time. Due to crowding and lack of infrastructures, some refugee camps can lack hygienic standards and this usually leads to a high incidence of infectious diseases and epidemics.
The fate of the vast flow of people heading from the Middle East and North Africa to Europe may depend on what we call them, even if the definitions are now becoming blurred.
According to the United Nations, a refugee is “a person fleeing armed conflict or persecution”. Migrants "choose to move not because of direct threat of persecution or death, but mainly to improve their lives by finding work, or in some cases for education, family reunion or other reasons”.
The terms asylum-seeker and refugee are often confused: an asylum-seeker is someone who says he or she is a refugee, but whose claim has not yet been evaluated.
In mid- 2014 there were more than 1.2 million asylum-seekers.
Somalia
After decades of civil war and the collapse of the central government in 1991, Somalis and international supporters have made progress since 2012 in re-establishing state structures and bringing stability to the country. The African Union and the United Nations are now improving security and countering al-Shabab, a violent extremist group

You will see some of us reading out loud phrases that describe how and when we feel at home. Some photos have been added to show different ways of feeling at home around the world. Since we are currently attending a Linguistic High School and we are studying several languages, we thought it would be a good idea to use them all.

ISIS has seized a large portion of eastern Syria and parts of northern and western Iraq. This group is considered a terrorist organization by the UN and by many of the world's countries. They are now fighting to take control over Libya, Turkey and Lebanon.
The main reason why they are creating such an enormous tension all over the world is that they want to gain control over the territories in the Middle East. They conceal it beneath religious reasons, but in truth they just want oil and natural gas, energy sources of which the underground is rich.
