Considerations for sUAS flight performance

  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Wind (Speed and Direction)
  • Visibility
  • Clouds
  • Barometric Pressure
  • Precipitation
  • High Speeds vs. Drone Speed
  • Differences At Altitude
  • Turbulence (Uneven Surface Heating)
  • Obstructions On The Ground
  • Buildings / Mountains
  • Air Masses and Fronts

Unstable Air

  • Cumuliform Clouds
  • Showery Precipitation
  • Rough Air (Turbulence)
  • Good Visibility

Stable Air

  • Stratiform Clouds And Fog
  • Continuous Precipitation
  • Smooth Air
  • Fair To Poor Visibility (Haze)
  • Sufficient Water Vapor
  • An Unstable Lapse Rate
  • An Initial Lifting Force (Upward Boost)
  • Updrafts / Downdrafts
  • Hail
  • Microbursts
  • Lightning
  • Wind Shear (20 NM Out)
  • Vortex / Funnel / Tornado

Visible Moisture (Clouds / Rain)

Negative Effects On Performance

  • Decreased Lift
  • Weight Increase
  • Stalling Speed Increase (Fixed Wing)
  • Propeller Stall (Rotary Wing)
  • Decreased Thrust
  • Increased Drag

  • Radiation
  • Advection
  • Upslope
  • Precipitation Induced
  • Steam Fog

Normal - Air density decreases

with altitude. Atmospheric pressure

determines what the air feels like at

the surface. Density altitude is a

"feels like" altitude assigned as equivalent to the height at a particular

altitude above sea level.

Lower density altitude decreases

performance.

It is also affected by temperature and

Humidity.
